RECAP OF THE TCOPA DAY OF COP TRAINING HELD AT LAPORTE PD 7/27/2024
Hosted by LaPorte COP and Humble COP Teams
Good day all!
Following up on the DAY OF COP TRAINING, we had our TCOPA ZOOM board meeting last Monday (8/13/2024) evening and the board congratulated us for our excellent day of COP training. They admitted that they were kind of skeptical about the two COP’s working together with the distance between the two, over 40 miles apart, but the event came together very well!
A very special thanks to Richard Browder, LaPorte COP and Mary Malloy, Humble COP for working together to make this happen! The time and effort they put into this event is appreciated. They went well above and beyond to make this event one of the best!
We were fortunate to have some of the best trainers in the surrounding Houston area to cover importanttopics for our COP training. We really appreciate these instructors that gave us their time on a Saturday to help train our COP members to make our TCOPA Region 4 COP members better equipped for things they may come across while on patrol
Recapping the training day classes that was held:
TCOPA President Round Rock PD LT Angelo Marmarinos kicked off the day speaking about the importance of COP units working with police departments. How we are extra eyes and, in many ways, help the city we patrol for.
Stop the Bleed-DPS Sgt. Stephen Woodard and Pearland EMT Supervisor Raquel Garza were amazing. They brought the advanced dummies, the ones that “bleed” for more realistic situations.
DWI Recognition with Humble PD DRE Officer Kent Guidry brought several handouts and covered a lot of great information about driving impaired and the results that can happen. Always does outstanding presentations.
Traffic Control-This one had some challenges. Richard was at the station by 330am to set up the traffic control course in the parking lot. Unfortunately, the rain came and we had to move the course inside. Then Officer Martin Dornelly who was to be the instructor was called to a shooting and had to leave. Our LaPorte CPA Liaison Steven Guerro stepped in and taught the course. Hats off to Officer Guerro for diving in and make the presentation!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) was conducted by Pasadena Officer Thomas Cannon. Got in-depth with how this is changing our world. A very hot topic and Officer Cannon covered a lot of great information.
10 minute CPR and Narcan was conducted by LaPorte EMS Captain William Miller. Great presentation on both subjects. Spent a lot of time on Narcan not only how to use it but an explanation of how it works and how to care of the person while waiting for medical to arrive.
Fire Suppression was conducted by LaPorte Fire Marshall Deputy Thomas Galindo along with two of his investigators. Covered not only how to use a fire extinguisher but also items like how we can assist them. Example: we could use our COP cars to protect hoses at a scene to prevent cars from running over them or block traffic.
Other items of interest: Thank you LaPorte Assistant Police Chief Bennie Boles, Assistant Police Chief John Krueger and Lt. Matt Novosad for stopping by Saturday morning for words of thanks and the importance of COP teams working with the police departments.
We had 32 attend the training from LaPorte, Humble, League City, Pasadena, Ft. Worth, Deer Park and Round Rock. We had 21 new members that joined. Several from LaPorte had signed up just to volunteer for the event and decided to join TCOPA! There were a total of 10 came from Humble COP.
TCOPA President Angelo Marmarios and 2nd VP George Joos joined us for this first ever Region 4 day of COP training coming from Round Rock. We were glad to have them! Attendees have or will receive recognition certificates for Stop the Bleed and TCOPA Region 4 Day of Training.
Thanks to COP leader Richard Browder (and LaPorte CPA President) for joining TCOPA and helping with me to lead the LP COP belong to the state level. And Mary Malloy COP Admin/Dispatch/Trainer (also Humble CPA President) for all she does to make the Humble COP the organization it is today and working with LP COP on the reorganization plan.
And finally, a huge THANK YOU to the City of LaPorte Police Department for the opportunity to have this event held at your station. Everyone in attendance commented how nice facility is and the hospitality!
